Second Half Goals Lift W&J over Houghton 2-0
WASHINGTON, Pa. – On a rainy afternoon at Cameron Stadium, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team shutout visiting Houghton 2-0 for the Presidents' sixth win of the 2013 season.
A back-and-forth defensive battle for most of the first half, the Presidents (6-2) and Highlanders (1-6) played to a 0-0 draw after 35 minutes. Scoring did not open up until the 47th minute when senior Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway) collected her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Poked in from in front of the cage, Villa put W&J ahead 1-0, on an assist from freshman Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi).
Nearly 12 minutes after the first goal, a penalty corner opportunity provided the Presidents with some insurance. Senior Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) set up the corner to junior Gina Taglieri (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach), who quickly fed the ball to senior Tori Patrick (State College, Pa./State College Area). Patrick, playing in her first game this season, connected on a perfect shot-pass to Beaudoin in front of the cage for the team’s second goal.
The Presidents’ defense and goalkeeper Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton) stood tall the remaining 10 minutes of action, keeping Houghton off the board. Brozena played all 70 minutes and recorded her fourth shutout of the season, making three saves.
W&J outshot Houghton 9-6 for the game and edged the Highlanders in penalty corners, 6-4.
Washington & Jefferson will play a road game at 2:00 pm tomorrow at Shenandoah.
