Seven Presidents Named To All-Academic Water Polo Team
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Seven Washington & Jefferson College Presidents were named to the 2011-12 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Men’s All-Academic Team on Friday.
Nearly 250 water polo student-athletes were honored from NCAA Division I, II and III programs as well as NAIA teams. The student-athletes were grouped into three teams: Outstanding (3.71-4.00), Superior (3.41-3.70) and Excellent (3.20-3.40).
W&J had two players land on the outstanding level, freshmen Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury). Magdic had 27 goals and 15 assists during his rookie year, while DeNunzio notched 80 saves during his 16 appearances in goal.
Junior Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Conor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) collected superior laurels. Weiland was second on the team in 2011 with 21 assists, while scoring 16 goals. Crowe, who also plays lacrosse for the Presidents this spring, racked up 14 points (8g, 6 a) and 11 steals in the pool.
Junior Alex Shuey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), sophomore Nick Thorneloe (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and freshman Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) all landed on the excellent squad. Shuey was third on the team with 19 steals, while supplying 12 goals and 15 assists and Thornloe finished the season with 10 points (7g, 3 a). Krause tied Magdic for third on the Presidents with 27 goals and he dished out 16 assists.
W&J posted a 7-12 record in 2011. Next fall, W&J will be under the direction of a new head coach, Jeremiah O’Neil, who was hired this winter.
