Shipley’s Goal Leads Presidents By Waynesburg In Overtime

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) scored the game-winning goal with just over four minutes remaining in the second overtime period to give the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team a 2-1 PAC victory over Waynesburg on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
Freshman Tatum Marucci (Youngtown, Ohio/Poland Seminary) sent a lead pass to senior Liz Bendick (Yonkers, N.Y./Hackley), who crossed the ball to Shipley to set up the game-winning score.
With the win, the Presidents (13-3, 7-0) ran their school-record winning streak to 11 games. Waynesburg fell to 14-3 overall and 5-2 in PAC play.
W&J took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by freshman Jess Skovira (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland). Skovira redirected a pass from sophomore Sarah Zeh (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) into the back of the goal. Junior Chrissy Marcius (North Hungtingdon, Pa./Norwin) also picked up an assist on the play, her PAC-leading 14th of the season.
Susie Godwin got behind the W&J defense and scored to even the game at one in the 74th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Saussol (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) made five saves to earn her 28th career victory.
W&J faces Thomas More at Alexandre Stadium on Wednesday in its regular season home finale (8:00 pm).
