Shipley Leads Presidents To 4-1 Victory Over Marietta

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior forward Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) scored two goals, including one that answered an early second half Marietta goal, to help Washington & Jefferson defeat the Pioneers 4-1 in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.

The Presidents (2-4) outshot Marietta (2-6) by a 23-2 margin and dominated possession for a majority of the match.

Shipley struck first in the 10th minute after directing home a long cross from sophomore midfielder Jess Skovira (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland).

The lead remained that way until two minutes into the second half when Danielle Falkner slipped a pass behind the W&J defense and Lauren Morain converted the goal after finding herself all alone.

However, Shipley quickly halted the Pioneers' momentum less than three minutes later after taking a pass from senior midfielder Dawn Murphy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), fending a MC defender, and sliding a shot past Kaitlyn Pearse inside the right post.  The W&J defense took over from that point and held Marietta without a shot for the final 43 minutes.

Shipley launched a corner kick with 20 minutes left which was knocked off the goal line by a Marietta defender right onto the foot of junior midfielder Nikki Hladik (Renfrew, Pa./Butler), who drilled home her second goal of the season.

Sophomore Mattie Follen (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) made the most of her only save of the match.  With 1:04 remaining in the first half, Falkner got behind the Presidents' defense and was all alone in a 1-vs-1 situation with Follen, who snared the shot attempt to keep W&J ahead at halftime.  Murphy tacked on the final goal with five minutes left off a pass from senior defender Lauren Reynolds (Irwin, Pa./Norwin).

Pearse finished with eight saves for the Pioneers.

W&J returns to action on Sunday at Penn State-Altoona for a 5:00 pm match.
