Shipley's Five-Point Game Not Enough for W&J Against Waynesburg
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Taylor Bombalski’s header off a corner kick with eight seconds remaining in overtime lifted Waynesburg past the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J falls to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action, but still hold on to slim hopes to earn the fourth and final spot in the postseason conference tournament. The Presidents will need to win their final two regular-season matches and get some outside help from other teams around the conference.
The Presidents jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half, securing two goals off the foot of senior Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland). Shipley’s 13th and 14th goals of the season were tallied in the ninth and 15th minutes, respectively.
Waynesburg (7-7-1, 4-2-1 PAC) cut the two-goal deficit in half in the 30th minute when Emily Mullady connected on a successful penalty kick attempt. The Yellow Jackets, who have defeated W&J three consecutive times, were able to find the equalizer five minutes before halftime, getting a goal from senior Susie Godwin.
Coming out of the break, Waynesburg took its first lead of the contest at 57:29 thanks to a goal from the team’s leading goal scorer, Natalie Abraham. After eight minutes had ticked off the clock, it was W&J’s turn to net the tying goal. Shipley delivered a perfect cross in front of the net to senior Bianca Rajan (Haiku, Hawaii/King Kekaulike), who delivered her second goal of the fall into a wide open net, knotting the score at 3-3.
In the 71st minute, the Presidents had appeared to take the lead back on what would have been Shipley’s third goal of the game, but the play was ruled offsides. With a 3-3 deadlock after 90 minutes of play, the teams entered a 10-minute sudden death overtime period. Bombalski tallied the game-winner off a corner from Mullady with a few ticks left on the clock, propelling WU to the 4-3 victory.
Washington & Jefferson travels to Bethany, W. Va., Tuesday (Oct. 29) for a 3:00 pm matchup against the Bison.
