Skovira's Late Goal Runs W&J's Win Streak to Five
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore Hayley Skovira’s (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) header in the 83rd minute lifted the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Penn State-Behrend Wednesday night, the team’s fifth consecutive victory.
Plenty of soccer was played before Skovira’s eventual game-winner and the two teams battled to nearly identical statistics across the boards. W&J (5-4) positioned itself with a prime scoring chance early in the contest when senior Ariel Shasko’s (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) header off a corner kick rang off the post. The Presidents outshot the Lions (4-4-1) in the first half, 5-3.
With the score deadlocked at zero and time ticking away in regulation, Skovira came through for W&J, heading home a shot off a corner kick into a wide open net to up her season goal total to two. The game winner was set up by senior Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland), who picked up her team-leading fifth assist of the season and ran her consecutive point streak to six games.
W&J edged PSU-Behrend in shots (10-9) and corner kick opportunities (6-4). Both goalkeepers, including Presidents’ starter Morgan Kinyon (Stockton, Calif./William Jessup), made five stops on the night. Kinyon improved her record to 3-4 and earned her second shutout of the season.
Washington & Jefferson returns to the pitch Saturday, October 5 at 1:00 pm to open Presidents’ Athletic Conference action at Alexandre Stadium versus Westminster.
