Small's Game-Winner Propels W&J to 1-0 Win Over Muskingum
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Junior Dylan Small’s (Whittier, Calif./Whittier) first collegiate goal proved to be enough for the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team as the Presidents defeated Muskingum 1-0 on Homecoming Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.
The Presidents (5-4) dominated the contest, racking up 16 shots while allowing the Muskies (5-5) to take just three the entire match. With much of the game being played in the Muskingum end, W&J also led in corner kick opportunities, 6-2.
A strong outing by Muskingum goalkeeper Mathais Buchner kept the Presidents off the board until the 66th minute of play. Small’s soft touch off a pass from senior Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) in front of the net broke the game open and put W&J ahead which was all the Presidents needed.
Starting W&J keeper Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) played all 90 minutes and made one save. Best earned his second shutout of the season, while the team earned its fifth of the year. All five W&J victories this fall have been shutouts.
Washington & Jefferson begins Presidents’ Athletic Conference action next Saturday (Oct. 5) at 3:30 pm by hosting Westminster at Alexandre Stadium.
