Sophomores Help W&J Women Stake Early Lead At GCC Winter Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomores Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) and Jennifer Suder (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) both earned titles and helped the Washington & Jefferson College women sit atop the standings Friday night following the first of two days at the 16th Annual Grove City College Winter Swimming & Diving Invitational. 

The W&J women lead the five-team standings with 339 points, while the men's squad is third with 275 behind Wheeling Jesuit (410) and Grove City (278).  Senior John Szott posted the lone championship for the Presidents' men after posting 251.55 points on the 3-meter diving board. 

Sweitzer was victorious in the 50 freestyle (25.30), while also leading the 400 medley relay (4:12.90) to a second-place showing.  Suder topped the nine-women 1-meter diving field with 206.80 points. 

Sophomore Sara Boldt (Kenttwood, Mich./East Kentwood) took third place in the 500 freestyle (5:30.28), while senior Patrick O'Toole (Butler, Pa./Fox Chapel) turned in a third-place men's showing in the 200 IM (2:03.87).

The men's 400 medley relay, comprised of sophomores Ben McGrath (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif./Loyola) and Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshmen Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Armando Paolino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug Regional), earned runner-up laurels with a time of 3:46.19. 

Prior to that, Dunigan took fourth in the 200 IM (2:04.46). while McGrath and Paolino swam legs on the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.07) which placed third. 

The second and final day of the invitational begins Saturday morning.
