Spearman Takes 125 Runner-Up To Lead W&J at Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Freshman 125-pounder Jacob Spearman (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) earned a runner-up finish to lead Washington & Jefferson College Saturday at the Waynesburg University Wrestling Invitational.
The Presidents claimed ninth place in the 12-team field with 50 points. Olivet (Mich.) was first at 198.5, while West Liberty (131) and Johns Hopkins (119) were second and third, respectively.
Spearman recorded three victories to advance to the championship bout. He opened by defeating Elizabethtown’s Timothy Miranda by fall (1:55) before notching a 13-3 major decision against Apprentice’s Shane Smith.
In the semifinals, he topped Olivet’s Esteben Gonzales by major decision (14-3); however, top-seeded Paul Bewak of Johns Hopkins defeated Spearman 10-4 in the finals.
Freshman Ezekial Stroupe (Rochester, Pa./Freedom) placed sixth at 184 pounds after earning a pair of wins in the consolation bracket, while classmate Brian Haney (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) notched a 3-3 record and placed sixth at 165 pounds. Haney had two falls in the consolation bracket to up his team-leading total to three this winter.
Sophomore Josh Tropp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) racked up three victories in the 133-pound bracket.
W&J returns to the mats next Saturday at the Ursinus Will Abele Invitational in Collegeville, Pa.
