SUNY-Geneseo Nips Presidents Late
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Liz Doherty scored off a penalty corner pass from Kayla DeAngelis with 8:31 remaining to give SUNY-Geneseo a 3-2 field hockey victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
The Presidents (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season after clawing back from an early 2-0 hole. The Knights (2-1) received a pair of goals from Sarah Malinak in the opening eight minutes, the second of which was assisted by DeAngelis.
W&J sliced the lead in half five minutes after Malinak's second goal when freshman forward Kelly Knisel (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) netted a goal off a pass from senior midfielder Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway).
Nine minutes after halftime, Knisel delivered another goal to tie the game. Freshman forward Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) sent the pass across to Knisel.
Doherty put the Knights in front in the final 10 minutes, but W&J had a number of scoring chances remaining. Knisel actually slipped a shot goalie Dayna Mercer with five minutes left, but the goal was waived off due to a whistle just before her reverse sweep for a penalty corner.
Mercer totaled eight saves for the Knights, who held a 16-14 shot advantage. Sophomore Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton) also turned back eight shots for the Presidents in goal.
W&J aims to get back into the win column tomorrow at noon when hosting Wittenberg.
