Supp And Ufolla Lead W&J Tennis To Sixth Place Finish At PAC Championships
ERIE, Pa. -- Singles victories by senior Danielle Ufolla (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) and junior Jenna Supp (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) highlighted the Washington & Jefferson College women’s tennis team’s performance during the 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships at the Pennbriar Racquet & Fitness Club.
Supp took third place in the No. 4 singles flight to pace the Presidents. W&J took sixth place in the team standings with 11 points, the program's best finish since tying for sixth in 2009. Saint Vincent and Westminster tied for the team title with 49 points, while the Lady Bearcats earned the tiebreaker and automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Supp and Ufolla became the first Presidents to claim singles victories at conference championship tournament since Elizabeth Kress (No. 2 singles) and Carrie Campbell (No. 6 singles) earned quarterfinal victories in 2008.
Fifth-seeded Ufolla defeated fourth-seeded Samantha Jenson of Geneva 6-2, 6-0 in her No. 3 singles match, while Supp claimed a No. 4 singles victory in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) over Waynesburg’s Markie Gustafson. Supp was the No. 3 seed in the fourth flight, while Gustafson entered the tournament seeded sixth.
Ufolla then dropped her semifinal match to top-seeded Karolina Lagerquist of Grove City 6-1, 6-0. Supp was also defeated in the semifinals by Saint Vincent’s Jacqueline Hauser (No. 2 seed) in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 before bouncing back to defeat No. 5 seed Brittany Kress of Geneva 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in the third-place match.
Ufolla lost a 6-2, 6-2 decision to third-seeded Stephanie Rubin of Saint Vincent in her third-place match.
W&J completed its regular season with a record of 7-4 (6-3 PAC) under first-year Head Coach Chris Faulk, its first winning mark since 1999.
