Taylor Potts Named PAC Wrestler of the Week
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior heavyweight Taylor Potts (Wellsburg, W. Va./John Marshall) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week on Monday.
Potts posted a 3-0 record at Saturday’s Mel Berry Duals hosted by Thiel College in Greenville, Pa. He recorded falls during all three matches in a combined time of five minutes and 23 seconds.
Potts opened by pinning Thiel’s Kraig Smith in 2:17 and then quickly took care of Seton Hill’s Ron Oswald in 25 seconds. His victory against Matt Knapp of Mercyhurst Northeast came with 19 seconds left in the first period and clinched a comeback team win for the Presidents. The six points from the fall helped W&J defeat Mercyhurst Northeast by a 28-27 margin.
During the tournament, Potts moved into ninth place on the school’s all-time win list by recording the 74th triumph of his career. He owns a 74-41 career record with 18 victories by fall.
With three more victories, Potts would become the fifth wrestler in W&J history to reach 30 in a single season. The program’s all-time wins leader, Kevin DeJuliis ’03, set the single-season record in 2003 with 36 victories. DeJuliis finished with 117 wins.
Earlier this year, Potts placed third at the Ursinus Invitational (Jan. 14), fourth at the King’s Invitational (Nov. 5) and fifth at the Mercyhurst Invitational (Nov. 19).
Potts gives W&J back-to-back conference wrestlers of the week awards after sophomore Josh Etzel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) was selected last week.
