Thomas More Earns Sunday Win Over Presidents' Softball

WASHINGTON, Pa. –  Samantha Ladenburger pitched four innings of one-hit ball, while adding two hits and two RBI at the plate to lead Thomas More to a 7-4 Presidents’ Athletic Conference softball win over Washington & Jefferson on Sunday, May 1 morning at Brooks Park.  The second game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.

Ladenburger allowed one unearned run in the fourth inning and struck out one.  She also had RBI singles in the first and fourth innings.

Thomas More (24-11, 13-2 PAC) scored three times in the first and extended its lead to 5-0 in the third on Amanda Minor’s two-run homer.

W&J got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as freshman catcher Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp.) doubled and scored on an error.

The Presidents (6-19, 1-10 PAC) narrowed the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth, but that was as close as they would get.  Junior first baseman Brittany Swartzwelder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) doubled and scored on freshman left fielder Kasey Bethel’s (Cadiz, Ohio/Harrison Central) {pictured} single.  Bethel then crossed home plate on Cunningham’s base hit.

Cunningham led the W&J lineup with three hits and two RBI.  She is now batting .419 (36-for-86) this season.   Freshman shortstop Marissa Pattison (Claysville, Pa./McGuffey) went 2-for-3 with a double and scored once.  Freshman pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings.  She struck out four Saints.

The Presidents travel to Westminster Monday for a 3:30 pm PAC doubleheader.
