Three Presidents Win Titles At Marietta Ice Breaker

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Three Washington & Jefferson College Presidents won events Saturday at the Marietta College Indoor Track & Field Ice Breaker on Saturday afternoon. 

The Presidents' women took second place in the four-team field with 118 points.  The host Pioneers won with 133 points, while Washington and Lee (108) and Alderson-Broaddus (48) rounded out the field. 

Marietta also won the men's championship with 199 points followed by Washington and Lee (114), Washington & Jefferson (85) and Alderson-Broaddus (47). 

The W&J men had two individual champions, sophomores Joshua Makepeace (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and Earl Hord (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston).  Makepeace ran a time of 2:03.33 in the 800 meters, while Hord posted a top mark of 11.32 meters in the triple jump. 

Junior Meghan Poinsett (Salem, N.J./Salem) recorded the women's lone title after running the 400 meters in 1:02.75. 

Junior Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./Juniata) notched a pair of runner-up finishes for the W&J women in the shot put (10.14m) and weight throw (9.80m).  Junior Erin Oberg (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) was second in the triple jump (9.52m), while freshman Kenzie Blackmon (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) was the runner-up in the 500 meters (1:26.65).  Freshman Kaleigh Gallagher (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois Central) earned second place in the 800 meters (2:42.72).

Senior Benjamin Kopchick (Clarksburg, Pa./Saltsburg) placed second for the men's squad in the 5,000 meters (16:57.09), while classmate Michael Hildreth (Wind Ridge, Pa./West Greene) posted the same finish in the shot put (12.05m). 

Both teams will be back in action on Friday at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational.
