Titans Sweep W&J in PAC Softball
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Lis Schulz and Ashley Beltz both homered and drove in four runs as Westminster College swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Washington & Jefferson College on Monday, May 2.
The Titans (18-14, 11-5 PAC) won game one 6-1 and then earned an 8-0 decision in five innings in game two.
Schulz also pitched a complete game in the opener and held W&J to seven hits, while striking out two. The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning before her three-run homer put WC in front for good.
W&J (6-21, 1-12 PAC) scored its lone in the fourth inning when senior third baseman Victoria Doerschner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) led off with a single and scored on sophomore Erin Shuman's (Chester, W.Va./Oak Glen) two-out base hit.
Game two was also a close battle for a majority of the game as the Titans led 1-0 heading into the fifth before scoring seven times to force an early end. Beltz homered to lead off the inning and then added a second RBI during the frame after drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Chelsea Brown picked up the win on the mound after pitching four innings and limiting the Presidents to four hits. Shuman took the loss for W&J after allowing four earned runs on six hits (seven walks) in 4 2/3 innings.
W&J looks to get in the win column on Tuesday when hosting Muskingum for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 pm at Brooks Park.
