Utica Edges W&J In New York
UTICA, N.Y. – Alaina Stojkovski scored with 23 minutes remaining to lift Utica to a 1-0 Empire 8 Conference field hockey victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (13-3, 6-1), who sit in second place in the E8 standings, outshot W&J (11-6, 2-4) 12-5 and attempted 10 of the match’s 12 penalty corners.
Sophomore Kira Bunker (Telford, Pa./Souderton) had seven saves for W&J, which now needs a win over Nazareth next Saturday and an Ithaca loss to either St. John Fisher (tonight) or Hartwick (Nov. 2) to earn the fourth and final spot in the Empire 8 Tournament which will be hosted in New Jersey by Stevens.
Washington & Jefferson had two shot attempts in the final 70 seconds, but both were saved by Utica goalie Kells Casey.
W&J plays a non-conference match at Bethany on Halloween night Thursday at 7:00 pm.
