Washington & Jefferson Places Eighth At Mercyhurst
HARBORCREEK, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's golf team took eighth place this weekend at eight-team, two-day Mercyhurst Spring Invitational at Dowling Golf Club (Par 72 - 5,601 yards). The Presidents carded 836 strokes (409-427).
California (Pa.) won the team title with 639 strokes. The host Lakers placed second with 654 shots followed by Notre Dame's (Ohio) two-day score of 672. Gannon (693), Tiffin (699), Clarion (718), Westminster (790) and W&J rounded out the standings.
Mercyhurst's Andrea Novoa shot a 10-over par score of 154 (78-76) to earn medalist honors in the 46-player field.
The Presidents' top finisher was freshman Amanda Halula (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). She carded 180 strokes (91-89) and placed 25th. Junior Katelyn Vannoy (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) earned 38th place with 198 strokes (103-95).
Senior Ellen Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman Kylie McKenna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) placed 45th and 46th, respectively. Schmitt totaled 223 shots (112-111), while McKenna finished with 281 (149-132).
The Presidents' scoring average leader, sophomore Jennifer Suder (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), withdrew from the tournament after shooting 103 in the opening round Saturday.
W&J is now idle for a week before competing in the 2013 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships (Apr. 22-23) at Cedarbrook Golf Club.
