Waynesburg Trips Up Presidents 1-0
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Waynesburg's Susie Godwin scored the lone goal in the 31st minute and the Yellow Jackets handed Washington & Jefferson its first Presidents' Athletic Conference regular-season women's soccer loss in nearly two years following a 1-0 victory on Friday night at Wiley Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (9-6-1, 5-1-1 PAC) took over second place in the league standings and defeated the Presidents (9-6-1, 5-1-1 PAC) for the second-straight time. In last year's PAC semifinals, WU edged W&J by the same 1-0 margin in Washington.
W&J's last regular-season conference loss came on October 23, 2010, when Thomas More nipped the Presidents 1-0 in Kentucky in double overtime. Since that setback, W&J had posted a 15-0-2 league record prior to tonight.
Godwin collected a loose ball following a scramble in front of the net after an Erica Nordlund corner kick and scored. Despite being outshot by a 15-9 margin, the Yellow Jackets made the lead hold up as goalkeeper Ciara Scott compiled seven saves.
Sophomore Mattie Follen (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) notched two saves for the Presidents, who attempted nine of the game's 12 corner kicks.
W&J takes on conference-leading Thomas More (15-1, 6-0 PAC) in Kentucky on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
