Westminster Sweeps W&J In PAC Softball At Brooks Park
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Chelsea Brown earned both victories on the mound for Westminster Tuesday as the Lady Titans swept a softball doubleheader from Washington & Jefferson at Brooks Park.
Westminster (12-10, 4-0 PAC) stayed perfect in conference play with an 8-2 victory in game one as well as a 1-0, eight-inning triumph in the nightcap.
Brown stymied the Presidents in game one, allowing only one earned run on three hits in the complete game victory.
W&J grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp.) singled and scored after sophomore pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) reached on an error.
However, he Lady Titans scored three times in the second and four more in the third to build a six-run lead. W&J committed five errors during those frames which resulted in seven unearned runs allowed by Rotto.
Rotto also tossed a complete game, allowing one earned run on eight hits, while striking out three. Freshman third baseman Sadie Marak (Butler, Pa./Butler) doubled and scored for the Presidents in the seventh. Erica Kimmick led the Lady Titan lineup with three hits and two RBI.
Game two was dominated by the pitchers, W&J freshman Bethany Shepherd (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) and three Westminster hurlers. Shepherd allowed the only run of the game in the eighth inning when Kelsey Squelch lined a run-scoring single to left field, plating Erika Pamer.
Brown pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the win in relief for Westminster. Shepherd limited the Lady Titans to five hits and struck out one batter.
Washington & Jefferson (8-12, 2-2 PAC) racked up nine hits in game two, all of which were singles, but the Presidents left 10 women on base. Cunningham had a 4-for-4 effort at the plate, while junior second baseman Stephanie Zur (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added a pair of hits.
W&J travels to Kentucky Saturday for a 1:00 pm twinbill with Thomas More.
