W&J and Grove City Battle to 0-0 Draw
WASHINGTON, Pa. – After 110 minutes of soccer in the cold and rainy weather, the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team earned a scoreless double overtime tie with Grove City Saturday afternoon on senior day.
With the tie, W&J remains unbeaten in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action, moving its record to 8-5-1 overall, 3-0-1 in the conference. Meanwhile, Grove City goes to 6-5-3 overall, and also stays unbeaten in league action, 3-0-1. Today’s shutout marks the eighth for the Presidents this fall season.
Each goalkeeper played the entire 110 minutes of action, with GCC keeper Brenden Alfery making five saves and W&J keeper Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) coming up with seven stops.
Perhaps W&J’s best chance to break the scoreless draw came six minutes into the first overtime period when senior Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) rang a shot off the post and wide.
Grove City outshot the Presidents by a 14-8 margin, that included a 7-3 span in the first half. Junior James Calvert (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) took four shots during the contest, leading the team.
Washington & Jefferson makes the trek to Crestview Hills, Ky. this Wednesday (Oct. 23) for a 1:00 pm match against Thomas More.
