W&J and Waynesburg Split Final PAC Twinbill
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Freshman first baseman Paige Deley (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) homered and knocked in four runs during Washington & Jefferson’s 9-7 game one PAC softball victory, but Waynesburg earned the split with an 8-0 shutout (five innings) during the nightcap on Sunday at Brooks Park.
The Presidents (15-21, 9-9 PAC) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Deley delivered a three-run homer.
Waynesburg (18-18, 7-11 PAC) chipped away at the lead and eventually grabbed a 4-3 advantage after scoring twice in the fifth. However, W&J scored six times on six hits (three WAY errors) in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Junior center fielder D.J. Ufolla (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) had the key hit with a two-run double to left-center field.
Deley was 2-for-3 in the opening game, while sophomores pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) and catcher Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) both added a pair of base hits. Junior Erin Shuman (Chester, W.Va./Oak Glen) was the winning pitcher in relief of Rotto after allowing four runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Jenna Dorazio led the Yellow Jacket lineup with a 4-for-4 day at the plate, including two home runs, and five runs batted in.
Waynesburg took control of the second game with four runs in the second inning before tacking on one in the fourth and three more in the fifth to end the game early. Jenn Ling fired a two-hit shutout, while Jasmine Blackwell collected two hits and four RBI.
Ufolla and freshman third baseman Sadie Marak (Butler, Pa./Butler) had the only hits for W&J. Shuman suffered the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits in two innings. All nine combined base hits by the two teams were singles.
W&J wraps up its 2012 season on Wednesday when it travels to Muskingum for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 pm.
