W&J Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep Of Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team finished off a three-game weekend sweep of Presidents’ Athletic Conference-rival Waynesburg by claiming victory in both games of its road doubleheader. W&J (19-4, 10-2) took game one by a score of 5-3 in eight innings and won game two, 5-1.
The Presidents and Yellow Jackets went to extra innings during game one with the contest knotted at three, but W&J quickly took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Sophomore third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Cansius) roped a two-out single into center field that knocked in junior center fielder Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and senior shortstop Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius), giving the Presidents a 5-3 lead.
Sophomore right-hander Brian O’Neill (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) retired the Yellow Jackets (16-13, 6-9) in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the victory. O’Neill earned his third win of the spring after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. Sophomore Eddie Nogay (Weirton, W.Va./Madonna) pitched the first six innings and allowed three runs (one earned), while striking out two.
McLain led W&J with two hits and a pair of RBI in four at-bats. Sophomore catcher Ronnie Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) knocked in two runs and scored twice, while Klinec added a pair of runs.
Zack Kreke took the loss on the mound for Waynesburg. Kreke pitched a complete game and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits. Nick Berdine paced the Yellow Jackets at the plate with two hits and a pair of RBI.
The Presidents took game two despite managing just two hits. Sophomore first baseman D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored on a wild pitch for the Presidents’ first run and senior left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) knocked in sophomore right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) with a ground out in the fourth inning to give W&J a 2-0 lead. The Presidents added three more runs in the sixth without the benefit of a hit.
Sophomore right-hander Randy Risch (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) shut out the Yellow Jackets through the first five innings. Risch allowed just five hits, while fanning three and earned his third victory of the season. Rob Baumgartel was the losing pitcher for Waynesburg after surrendering five earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.
W&J travels to Ohio on Monday to face Muskingum at 4:30 pm. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, but moved back one day because of weather concerns.
