W&J Blanks Grove City 2-0
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Sophomore goalkeeper Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) stopped all five shots that he faced to help Washington & Jefferson College to a 2-0 Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Grove City on Saturday afternoon.
The shutout was the third of the season for Best and fifth overall for the Presidents (4-5-1, 2-1-1 PAC). Best’s three shutouts are the most by a W&J keeper since Brandon Kern also posted three in 2009.
The Presidents took the lead in the 24th minute when junior defender Cory Ryhal (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) crossed a pass into the box that was headed in by sophomore James Calvert (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell). The goal was the first of Calvert’s collegiate career.
Sophomore Brian Hanna (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) provided W&J with an insurance tally just two minutes after halftime. Junior Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) sent a nice lead pass into the box to Hanna, who finished for his team-leading fifth goal.
Both team recorded five shots on goal and Grove City attempted all of the match’s 11 corner kicks. Wolverine goalkeeper Ben Weaver made three saves.
W&J looks to extend its unbeaten streak to four matches when it travels to Thiel on Wednesday (4:00 pm).
