W&J Claims Ninth-Place Match at Southern Championships
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team closed its 2012 season with a 10-6 victory over Penn State-Behrend to claim ninth place on Sunday at the 2012 CWPA Southern Championships hosted by Bucknell University. A total of 11 NCAA Division I, II and III water polo programs were in competition this weekend at the tournament.
The Presidents close the year with a 9-15 record, a two-win improvement from the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Four of those victories came against the Lions as W&J won all four meetings this fall. On Sunday morning, W&J led PSB 2-0 after the first quarter before extending its lead to 7-1 at halftime.
Sophomore Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) both notched three-goal efforts to lead the offense. Senior Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) fired in two goals during his final collegiate match, while freshman Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) also added a pair. Dunigan also drew three ejections and finished the year with a school single-season record 86.
Junior Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and sophomore Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) both played one half in goal. Francisco racked up six stops, while DeNunzio made five saves.
