W&J Claims Second Place At Peter C. Rossin Memorial

CANONSBURG, Pa. – Denison University shot a two-day score of 653 (321-332) to claim the Eighth Annual Peter C. Rossin Memorial hosted by the Washington and Jefferson College men’s golf team at Southpointe Golf Club.

The tournament, played at the home of the Nationwide Tour’s Mylan Classic, started with 18 holes on Sunday and finished Monday afternoon. 
W&J was second with 668 strokes after back-to-back team rounds of 334, while Columbus State (335-343) and Mount Union (333-345) tied for third with 678 strokes.  California University’s club team was fifth (694) followed by Point Park (701), Penn State-Behrend (711), W&J “B” (719) and La Roche (735).

Denison’s Aaron Klimchuk carded 156 strokes (77-79) to win the individual title in the 44-golfer field.  He was the only player to break 80 both days which were played under blustery conditions.

Sophomore Colin Izzo (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) led the W&J finishers by tying for second place with 160 strokes (77-83).  Freshman Ryan Mazza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) tied for fifth place with 163 strokes (81-82).

Sophomore Brian Omslaer (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) claimed 10th place with 168 strokes after turning in the Presidents’ best Monday round with 80 shots.   Freshman Matt Stearns (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) tied for 25th place with 177 strokes (88-89), while senior Pete Petrides (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) took 32nd place following rounds of 92 and 90.

Freshman Matt Long (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) paced the W&J “B” team by tying for 16th place with 173 strokes (84-89).  Freshman Logan Wetzel (Foxburg, Pa./Allegheny/Clarion Valley) also tied for 21st place (174—89-85).

W&J closes its fall season this weekend at the California (Pa.) Vulcan Invitational at Cedarbrook Golf Club.
