W&J Clips Grove City On Marcius’ Overtime Goal

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior Chrissy Marcius (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) scored 4:10 into overtime to lead the Washington & Jefferson College women’s soccer team to a 2-1 PAC victory against Grove City at Alexandre Stadium on Saturday.

Marcius took a lob pass from sophomore Jess Skovira (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) just inside the box and sent the ball dribbling into the right side of the net.  Grove City goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop, who had come out of the net to challenge the pass, and a trio of Wolverine defenders were unable to chase down the ball before it crossed the goal line.

The Presidents (8-5-1, 4-0-1), who are unbeaten in their last four regular-season overtime matches, have not lost a home conference game since 2009, a streak of 15 games (14-0-1).

Senior Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) put W&J in front in the 28th minute when she crossed a shot from the left side of the box just inside of the far post.

Sam Weber found the equalizer for Grove City (10-2-1, 3-2) under four minutes later.  Weber received a pass from Nicole Youngs-Stahl, got behind the W&J defense and beat sophomore goalkeeper Mattie Follen (Moon, Pa./Moon Township).

Both teams were unable to cash in on opportunities to score during the second half.  Senior Dawn Murphy (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) recorded the top chance for W&J, as she sent a header off the cross bar in the 71st minute.  Ten minutes later, a shot from Grove City's Shannon Bishop rang off the post.

W&J opens a three-match road trip on Tuesday when it faces Thiel in Greenville at 4:00 pm.
