W&J Competes At Carnegie Mellon Quad
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College sophomore Chris Casagrande (Suterville, Pa./Yough) and senior Benjamin Kopchick (Clarksburg, Pa./Saltsburg) won events for the men's squad, while juniors Mara Spina (Stockdale, Pa./Charleroi), Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./Juniata) and Erin Oberg (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) claimed women's championships to highlight the Presidents on Saturday at the Carnegie Mellon Track & Field Quad Meet.
The Presidents took fourth place in both men’s and women’s divisions with 84.5 points on men’s side and 128 in women’s. Penn State-Behrend (181 points - men; 166 points - women) claimed both team titles.
Casagrande posted a top throw of 52.63 meters in the javelin event, while Kopchick ran to a time of 10:06.57 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Oberg and Spina both jumped 1.53 meters in high jump. Straub threw the shot put 11.69 meters to earn the title, while also producing second place in the hammer throw (33.82m) and fourth place in the discus (32.95m). Oberg was also second in the triple jump (9.70m), while Spina was third in the long jump (4.66m).
Junior Laura Lee (Spartansburg, Pa./Titusville) was the runner-up in the 100 meters (13.30) and classmate Cheyenne Mangold (Boerne, Texas/Texas Military Institute) was second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.64). Sophomore Clariesa Johnson (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.91).
Senior Jared Jones (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) took second place in the 200 meters (22.46) and third in the 100 event (11.23) for the W&J men. He also anchored the 4x100 meter relay which notched third place in 44.05 seconds.
Freshman Lucas Tarr (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Laurel Highlands) was the third-place finisher in the high jump (1.69 meters).
