W&J Defeated By Saint Vincent 73-61

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College women’s basketball team suffered its fourth-straight defeat, falling to Saint Vincent College 73-61 at the Henry Memorial Center on Wednesday night.

The Presidents (10-12, 5-10) built a 14-10 advantage during the first seven minutes, but the Lady Bearcats (18-4, 13-2) responded with nine consecutive points to take a five-point lead.

SVC extended its lead behind 2011 PAC Player of the Year Brittany Sedlock.  Sedlock rattled off nine of the team’s next 13 points and Saint Vincent went into intermission ahead 37-26.

The Presidents fought back early in the second half.  Senior Blair Cotton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) started an 8-0 spurt by drilling a jumper with 17:38 remaining.  Classmates Vanessa Rivera (Reading, Pa./Wilson), Courtney Walsh (Mill-Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) and Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) all followed with buckets to help W&J pull within three points.

The Bearcats once again had an answer for the Presidents, reeling off 11-straight points to build their lead back to double digits with just over 10 minutes to play.

W&J closed the deficit to just three, but SVC made 8-of-10 free throws during the final two minutes to hold off the Presidents’ final surge. Devin McGrath nailed a key three-pointer with 1:31 left.

Kirkpatrick produced her second-straight double-double with team-highs 13 points and 12 rebounds.  She also added three assists and two blocks for the Presidents, who shot 39 percent (23-59).

Walsh added 12 points and eight boards, while Cotton netted 10 points.  Freshman Alexa DelGreco (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) was the fourth President in double figures with 11 points.

The Bearcats shot 36.7 percent (24-65) from the field, led by McGrath, who made 9-of-16 shots for 21 points.  Sedlock contributed 20 points and pulled down 13 boards.

W&J welcomes Grove City to the Henry Memorial Center on Saturday at 2:00 pm.  The Presidents will honor five seniors prior to tip-off.
