W&J Defeats Nazareth In Empire 8 Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In a rematch of last season’s Empire 8 Conference Championship match, the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team defeated Nazareth 5-1 in Rochester, New York on Saturday afternoon.  W&J moved to 2-0 on the season, while Nazareth fell to 1-2.

The Presidents jumped on the Golden Flyers early, scoring a pair of goals during the first four minutes of the match.  Senior Amanda Pflumm (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) netted the first goal 65 seconds into the game and classmate Arielle King (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) followed with her first goal of the season.

Senior Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) found the back of the net just before halftime to extend the Presidents’ edge to three.

Maggie Muzio put Nazareth on the board seven minutes into the second half, but W&J quickly responded, as King scored her second goal under two minutes later.

Sophomore Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) provided the final 5-1 margin with her first goal of the season.

W&J outshot Nazareth 14-9, while the Golden Flyers held a 12-5 edge in penalty corners.

Freshman Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton) stopped eight shots to earn her first collegiate victory in net.

The Presidents open the home portion of the their schedule on Wednesday when Wooster visits Cameron Stadium (7:00 pm).
