W&J Downs Franciscan To End Skid

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team halted its four-match losing streak by defeating Franciscan 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22) on Monday night in Ohio.

With the victory, W&J upped its record to 7-8 (1-7 PAC), while the Barons fell to 7-11 this fall.

Sophomore Lindsey Bennett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) set a career high with nine blocks to lead the defense, while also adding eight kills.  Bennett's block total was the highest by a President since Courtney Sherwin totaled nine blocks against Grove City in 2010.

Freshman Courtney Grdina (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) contributed a team-best 16 digs, while juniors Tori Clark (Fall Branch, Tenn./Sullivan South) and Madison Rotto (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) both recorded 11.  Clark added 11 kills for her first double-double of the fall.

Junior Samantha Chorney (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) aided the offensive effort with 10 kills. Sophomore Megan Stoehr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) dished out 39 assists and collected three blocks.

W&J returns to Presidents’ Athletic Conference action on Tuesday when Geneva visits the Henry Memorial Center at 7:00 pm.  The Golden Tornadoes downed the Presidents 3-1 earlier this season in Pittsburgh.
