W&J Drops Empire 8 Match To St. John Fisher

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Despite outshooting St. John Fisher College 13-8, the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team fell to the visiting Cardinals 2-1 on Saturday at Cameron Stadium.

W&J (3-3, 1-2 E8) dominated possession for much of the opening 35 minutes, but entered halftime trailing 1-0 after Kailen Maynard scored for the Cardinals (4-5, 2-1 E8) in the 22nd minute.

The Presidents were unable to capitalize on eight first-half penalty corners, while St. John Fisher did not attempt a penalty corner during the first stanza.

Elizabeth Cusack provided the Cardinals with a two-goal lead with just under four minutes remaining in regulation.

Senior Arielle King (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) scored the Presidents’ lone goal off a penalty corner as time expired.  King’s tally was her team-leading fifth of the season.

Danielle Famolaro earned the win in goal for St. John Fisher after making six saves. Freshmen goalkeepers Kira Bunker (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton) both played 35 minutes in net, making one save each.

W&J looks to return to the win column on Sunday when it faces Wilson in Chambersburg, Pa. (1:00 pm).
