W&J Drops First Two California Matches
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the California Baptist Lancer Invitational at the Lancer Aquatic Center. The Presidents (0-11) were defeated by Chapman by an 11-3 margin before suffering a 15-3 setback to Pomona-Pitzer.
Sophomore Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) held tough in the loss to Chapman by making eight saves. Juniors Margot Wummer (Havertown, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway) and freshman Rachel Clauss (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) supplied the goals.
Against Pomona-Pitzer, W&J fell behind 4-0 after the first quarter before rallying back to only trail 6-3 at halftime. PPC put the game away by outscoring the Presidents 6-0 in the fourth quarter.
Clauss, junior Kelsey Leis (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) and freshman Aly Fishbough (Exeter, Calif./Exeter Union) netted the Presidents' goals. Senior McKenzie Graf (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) stopped four shots in the goal.
Washington & Jefferson plays La Verne (3:00 pm EDT) and Whittier (9:00 pm EDT) tomorrow at Whittier.
