WASHINGTON, Pa. – Two members of the Washington & Jefferson football team received Presidents’ Athletic Conference weekly awards Monday for their efforts in lifting W&J to a 58-21 season opening win over Wooster.
Senior running back Dion Wiegand (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) earned PAC Offensive Player of the Week honors and preseason All-American wide receiver/kick returner Alex Baroffio (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) picked up PAC Special Teams Player of the Week laurels.
Wiegand carried the ball 19 times to net 128 yards on the ground, an average of 6.7 yards per carry. Three of his 19 rushes went for touchdowns, including a 51-yard sprint that opened the scoring just over a minute into the start of the game. All of Wiegand’s scores came in the first quarter of action, helping the Presidents jump out to a 28-7 lead after the opening quarter.
Baroffio produced nine receptions on offense and a touchdown, but it was his play on the special teams unit that earned him the recognition. Of his 257 all-purpose yards, 161 of those stemmed from kickoff and punt returns. The two-time All-PAC first team selection returned four punts for 69 yards. His 30-yard return in the first quarter set up W&J inside the Wooster 42, leading to the team’s second touchdown of the night. Baroffio shined on kick returns as well, racking up 92 yards on three returns, including a 42-yarder in the second quarter.
Washington & Jefferson hits the road again this Saturday with a trip to Rochester, N.Y., to face 19th-ranked St. John Fisher at 1:00 pm. The Cardinals rallied for a 28-24 victory over the Presidents last year at Cameron Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
