W&J Duo Selected As PAC Swimming & Diving Award Winners

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior John Szott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and sophomore Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) swept the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimmer/Diver of the Week awards on Monday.

Sweitzer helped Washington & Jefferson to its second-straight Grove City Winter Invitational women’s team championship by winning four events (three individual and one relay), while Szott earned both diving titles to lead the W&J men.

Overall, Sweitzer notched three runner-up showings in addition to her four triumphs this past weekend.  She was victorious in the 50 freestyle (25.30), while also leading the 400 medley relay (4:12.90) to a second-place showing during day one of competition.

On Saturday, Sweitzer swam to first-place finishes in the 100 (55.29) and 200 (2:00.14) freestyle events, while also helping the 400 freestyle relay (3:48.02) to another win.  She also swam on the 200 medley (1:55.69) and 800 freestyle (8:21.60) relays which placed second.

A 2012 First Team All-PAC choice, Sweitzer swam on a pair of relays last year which placed among the top three at the conference championships.

Szott continued his dominance during his final collegiate season on the diving boards with victories in the 1-meter (227.45) and 3-meter (251.55) events.  He defended his 1-meter title earned last year at the same invitational.

Szott, who also swept both events earlier this winter at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, is looking for his first PAC title.  The three-time First Team All-PAC choice has been the runner-up on both boards in each of his first three seasons at the conference championships.
