W&J Falls in Championship Match at DIII Women's Water Polo Eastern Championships
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Washington & Jefferson College women’s water polo team fell 7-2 to Grove City in the finals of the 2011 CWPA Division III Eastern Championships on Saturday, April 30.
The fourth-seeded Presidents advanced to the finals of the tournament, held this year at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., but couldn’t upend No. 2 seed Grove City in the third matchup against the Wolverines of the season.
Senior Kate Van Schaik (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) and freshman Dana Wieber (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) each scored for W&J. Van Schaik joined classmate Katie Wieber (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) on the All-Tournament Second Team which was announced following the championship match.
Sophomore McKenzie Graf (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) made eight saves in the cage for W&J.
The Presidents close their season with an 11-7 record, the first winning season in the 12-year history of the sport at the college. The 11 victories tied the school record established by the 2009 Presidents.
