W&J Falls In Empire 8 Tournament Semifinals
UTICA, N.Y. – Kaitlin McClymont posted nine saves and Jill Feibel tallied two goals and one assist to lead top-seeded Stevens past fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson College 5-1 in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Conference Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday.
Stevens advanced to the tournament final on Sunday where it will face No. 2 seed Utica, a 3-1 winner against third-seeded St. John Fisher on Saturday. W&J (11-8) failed to make the tournament finals for the first time since 2007.
Marguerite Chavez got the Ducks on the board just over three minutes into the game when she backhanded a shot past W&J freshman goalkeeper Kira Bunker (Magnolia, Del./Polytech).
The Presidents responded with a pair of scoring chances, but McClymont turned away a shot from junior Tori Patrick (State College, Pa./State College) and sophomore Catherine Beaudoin’s (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) rebound shot narrowly missed the cage wide.
Stevens built a three-goal lead before halftime as Feibel connected with Dailyn Brook for a goal before tallying her first of two goals on the day.
The Ducks took a commanding 5-0 lead with five minutes to play before senior Elizabeth Herb (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored her first goal of the fall to provide the final margin.
Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton) collected six saves in relief of Bunker, while senior Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) tallied seven shots on goal.
