W&J Falls Late On Senior Day; Marabella Breaks Goal Record (10/23)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior forward Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) became Washington & Jefferson College’s all-time field hockey goal scoring leader, but a pair of Golden Knight goals in the final 4:01 gave SUNY-Geneseo a 4-3 victory over the Presidents on Sunday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
Marabella scored her record-breaking goal at the 19:29 mark of the first half. She now has 43 career goals, surpassing Beth Kelley ’07 on the all-time list. Marabella is tied for 14th place on the active NCAA Division III goal scoring list.
The Presidents (11-3) grabbed an early lead on a goal by junior forward Amanda Pflumm (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River), but Kayla DeAngelis and Bridget McGovern scored less than four minutes apart to give the Golden Knights (9-8) a 2-1 lead.
Marabella tied the match and W&J went ahead 3-2 with 12:23 left on the clock in the second half as sophomore defender Victoria Patrick (State College, Pa./State College) drilled home a goal off a pass from Marabella on a penalty corner.
W&J appeared to be in position to claim the non-conference victory, but Rachel Atkins delivered the game-tying goal with just over four minutes remaining and DeAngelis followed with her second goal of the match just 1:14 later for the game winner.
SUNY-Geneseo outshot W&J by a 15-12 margin and held a 13-7 edge on penalty corners. Senior goalie Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) made eight saves for the Presidents, while Caityln Dowell stopped seven shots for the Golden Knights.
W&J travels to Frostburg State Wednesday for its final non-conference match of the season.
