W&J Field Hockey Picked Third in Empire 8 Preseason Poll
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team is slated to finish third in the Empire 8 Conference preseason head coaches poll which was announced on Friday.
The Presidents nabbed 34 points in the vote, to land in the third spot. Last season’s conference tournament champions, Utica, garnered the top spot in the poll with 49 points and seven first-place votes. Stevens landed the runner-up slot after one first-place vote and 43 points.
Slotting behind W&J are Hartwick (28), St. John Fisher (26), Ithaca (22), Nazareth (15) and Elmira (7).
Seventh-year Head Coach Jomara Coghlan has led the team to an Empire 8 Tournament berth during all previous six years of her tenure. The Presidents are seeking a conference championship and a return to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which they accomplished both for the first time in program history in 2011.
W&J begins the regular season at Cameron Stadium Aug. 30 with an 8:00 pm contest against Kenyon.
