W&J Field Hockey Tabbed Second In Empire 8 Preseason Poll
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The defending champion Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team was selected to finish second in the 2012 preseason Empire 8 Conference coaches poll released on Tuesday.
The Presidents received three first-place votes and garnered 54 total points. Stevens was picked as the preseason favorite with four first-place selections and 59 overall points.
Utica earned the final two first-place votes and was one point behind W&J in third. Following the Pioneers were Nazareth (42), Hartwick (33), Ithaca (31), Houghton (22), St. John Fisher (20) and Elmira (10).
W&J claimed a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history after winning its first-ever Empire 8 Conference Tournament in 2011. The Presidents have earned a spot in the league tournament finals during all five seasons of Head Coach Jomara Coghlan’s tenure.
W&J begins its 2012 campaign at Bethany on Sept. 6 at 7:00 pm.
