W&J Field Hockey Team Earns Academic Honor
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team earned recognition as an Empire 8 Conference All-Academic Team for its excellence in the classroom during the 2012 spring semester on Thursday.
W&J earned a 3.26 grade point average as a team last spring, making it one of 54 teams honored by the conference. Team’s must register a minimum GPA of 3.2 to be recognized. W&J competes in the Empire 8 in field hockey as an affiliate member.
In addition, 2012 graduate Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) and rising senior midfielders Elizabeth Herb (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) were selected to the Empire 8 President’s List. Colyer graduated with a 3.99 grade-point average, while Barno owns a 3.98 GPA. Herb has attained a cumulative GPA of 3.69 during her first three years at W&J. The conference recognized a total of 556 student-athletes for achieving high marks in the classroom while displaying positive sportsmanship on the field.
Herb is a three-year letterwinner, having scored one goal and dished out three assists in 50 career matches. Barno returns as a First Team All-North Atlantic Region and All-Empire 8 selection. She is one of the top point producers in school history (21 goals, 16 assists).
The Presidents are coming off the most successful season in program history after winning their first Empire 8 Conference title and earning a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament under sixth-year Head Coach Jomara Coghlan.
W&J opens its season Sept. 6 when it travels to Bethany (7:00 pm).
