W&J Finishes As CWPA Division III Eastern Runner-Up
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City scored the final six goals of the match and claimed the 2012 CWPA Division III Women's Water Polo Eastern Championship after defeating Washington & Jefferson 10-3 Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines (18-8) received five goals from Chelsea Johnson, who was selected as the CWPA Most Valuable Player after the tournament.
W&J's Sara Boldt (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) was selected as the CWPA Division III Freshman of the Year, while Head Coach Jay O'Neil was honored as the CWPA Coach of the Year in just his first season with the Presidents. O'Neil helped W&J tie a school record for single-season wins as the team produced an 11-5 record.
The Presidents and Wolverines played to a 2-2 tie after one quarter, but the Wolverines then scored three of the four goals in the second period before blanking W&J in the second half.
Sophomore Margot Wummer (Havertown, Pa./Germantown Academy) led W&J with a pair of goals, while senior Sarah Cull (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) closed out her career with one goal.
Sophomore Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway) paced the defense with three steals and three field blocks, while freshman Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) made 10 saves in the cage.
Cull was also selected to the First Team All-Conference squad, while Boldt and Villa were second-team honorees.
