W&J Hangs On for 3-2 Road Win Over Bethany
BETHANY, W. Va. – With a 3-2 win against the Bethany Bison Wednesday afternoon, the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team guaranteed itself at least the No. 3 seed in next week’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament.
Junior James Calvert (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) scored 38 seconds into the contest, off a deflection, to provide the Presidents (10-6-1, 5-1-1 PAC) with an early advantage. W&J chipped in another goal as time ticked away in the opening frame as from sophomore Adam Suter (Butler, Pa./Butler) found the back of the net in the 38th minute, giving his team a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Presidents wasted little time again in the early goings of the next period as junior Brian Hanna (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) beat the Bethany goalkeeper for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Hanna’s 20th career goal moves him into sole possession of sixth all-time at W&J.
Down by three goals with still much of the second half remaining, the Bison mounted a comeback attempt, scoring their first goal in the 51st minute. Bethany (7-11-1, 2-3-1 PAC) got another boost in the 70th minute when the PAC’s leading goal scorer Arkangelo James cut the Bison deficit to just one. The W&J defense and goalkeeper Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) stood tall though down the stretch, blocking a number of shots to preserve the 3-2 victory.
Best stopped eight Bison shots in his 90 minutes of action. Bethany led in shot attempts (25-13) and staked a 10-7 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington & Jefferson wraps up the regular season this Saturday (Nov. 2) when it faces the Thiel Tomcats in Greenville at 2:30 pm. A win or a Grove City loss to Thomas More would clinch the No. 2 seed in the PAC Tournament and the rights to host a semifinal match next Wednesday (Nov. 6 - 7:00 pm).
