W&J Indoor Track & Field Squads Place Fourth At Baldwin-Wallace
BEREA, Ohio -- Junior Mara Spina's (Stockdale, Pa./Charleroi) high jump victory led Washington & Jefferson College Friday night at the Baldwin-Wallace University Mid-January Meet at Harrison Dillard Indoor Track. Both Presidents' squads placed fourth.
John Carroll won the men's championship in a six-team field with 254.5 points, while the host Yellow Jackets topped the seven-team women's field with 157 points. The W&J men had 72.5 points, while the women amassed 84.5.
Spina tied B-W's Victoria Brown for first place and W&J's lone title after both athletes posted a top mark of 4'11 3/4". Junior Erin Oberg (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) took third in the same event (4'9 3/4").
The Presidents' women also had four second-place finishes, including junior Laura Lee (Spartansburg, Pa./Titusville) in both the 55 (7.83) and 200 (28.40) meter events. Junior Meghan Poinsett (Salem, N.J./Salem) was the runner-up in the 400 meters (1:01.79), while freshman Kenzie Blackmon (Erie, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) was second in the 500 meters (1:26.83). Junior Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./Juniata) placed second after a long toss of 35'6" in the shot put.
On the men's side, senior Jared Jones (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) notched a pair of second-place showings. He ran the 55 meters in 6.68 seconds and the 200 meters in 23.26 seconds. Sophomore Earl Hord's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) best mark of 39'7" placed him second in the triple jump. Hord also recorded a fourth-place finish in the long jump (19'4 3/4").
Senior Benjamin Kopchick (Clarksburg, Pa./Saltsburg) earned third place in the 5,000 meters (16:14.74) and sophomore Joshua Makepeace (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) was fourth in the 800 meters (2:04.97).
