W&J Jumps Out To Early Lead; Holds On For 13-11 Triumph
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College raced out to a 6-0 first-quarter lead and hung on to defeat Salem International 13-11 in men’s water polo action Sunday at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
The Presidents led 9-3 at halftime and the Tigers brought the deficit down to a pair of goals twice in the fourth quarter, but W&J held on. Sophomore Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) made a key save on a penalty shot to preserve the win. DeNunzio and junior Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) combined to make 14 saves.
Sophomore Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) paced the W&J offense with three goals each.
Seniors Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Cameron Chaves (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and freshman Ben McGrath (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif./Loyola) all notched two-goal efforts, while sophomore Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) recorded one goal.
The Presidents hit the road Saturday for matches at Mercyhurst (1:00 pm) and Penn State-Behrend (7:30 pm).
