W&J Men’s Golf Places Second At PAC Fall Invitational
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Defending champion Saint Vincent fired a two-day total of 588 to win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Fall Invitational Tuesday at Oak Tree Country Club.
The Bearcats will take a 16-stroke advantage into the 36-hole spring championship which will be hosted at Cedarbrook Golf Club (April 25-26, 2014) in Belle Vernon, Pa. The league’s automatic bid for the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament and 2014 league champions will be decided by the 72-hole total.
Washington & Jefferson was second with 604 strokes (306-298), while Grove City (608) is close behind in third. The Presidents and Wolverines tied for the lowest team round of the day Tuesday at 298.
Thomas More (628), Thiel (631), Westminster (648), Bethany (722) and Waynesburg (750) rounded out the field. The PAC fall co-medalists were Grove City’s Brian Giesler (75-69) and Saint Vincent’s Derek Lingafelt (70-74).
The Presidents’ top competitor was freshman Hunter Bagiatis (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), who placed fourth in the 40-man field. Bagiatis shot 74 during the opening round and 72 Tuesday.
Sophomores Evan Lestini (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and Tim Novic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) tied for eighth place. Lestini followed a first-round score of 78 with 73 strokes Tuesday, while Novic carded 76 shots Monday and 75 today.
Senior Colin Izzo (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) posted back-to-back rounds of 78 to tie for 15th place, while junior Matt Stearns (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) totaled 162 strokes (82-80) and placed 20th.
Washington & Jefferson, which has claimed 16 conference titles throughout history, continues its fall schedule this weekend at the McDaniel Invitational (The Bridges G.C.).
