W&J Men’s Golf Places Seventh At Vulcan Fall Invitational
BELLE VERNON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men’s golf teamed competed in the 54-hole California Vulcan Invitational this weekend at Cedarbrook Golf Club and placed seventh of 16 teams.
The Presidents shot a team score of 896 (295-290-311) which was 34 strokes behind tournament winner IUP (862—284-279-299). Mercyhurst was second with 881 shots, while West Chester (882), California (892), Carnegie Mellon (893) and California’s club team (894) also finished ahead of Washington & Jefferson.
Adam Jeffery of the Cal U club team won medalist honors with 209 strokes (66-68-75) in the 88-golfer field.
W&J’s top finisher was freshman Evan Lestini (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) who tied for 19th place. He carded a three-day score of 221 (71-67-83) and was four-under par during Saturday’s 36 holes.
Freshman Tim Novic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) totaled 223 strokes (77-75-71) and tied for 25th place, including a one-under par round on Sunday which was the Presidents’ best score.
Sophomore Matt Long (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) started with back-to-back rounds of 73 and shot 79 Sunday to post 225 strokes (T-32), while junior Colin Izzo (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) notched 231 strokes (74-75-82) to place 52nd. Sophomore Ryan Mazza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) rounded out the Presidents’ finishers in a 73rd-place tie with 238 shots (80-79-79).
Full individual standings were expected to be available on Monday morning.
W&J hosts its own tournament, the Peter C. Rossin Memorial, at Southpointe Golf Club on Oct. 7-8.
