W&J Men’s Lacrosse Set To Open 2012 Season
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men’s lacrosse team is set to embark on the 2012 season with a conference affiliation for the first time in the 11-year history of the program.
Led by ninth-year Head Coach Chad Moore, the Presidents have become the seventh member of the Landmark Conference for lacrosse only. Joining Washington & Jefferson in Landmark Conference play will be Catholic (Washington, D.C.), Drew (Madison, N.J.), Goucher (Towson, Md.), Merchant Marine Academy (King’s Point, N.Y.), Scranton (Scranton, Pa.) and Susquehanna (Selinsgrove, Pa.).
After playing as an independent since 2002, W&J will have a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time. Coming off a 5-10 season, W&J returns seven starters and 16 letter winners, including its top four scorers.
Senior Andrew Wallick (Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) leads the Presidents’ attack unit. Wallick netted 22 goals and 24 assists for a team-high 46 points last spring. He is already the all-time leader in assists (57) and needs 48 points to become the program’s top scorer.
Joining Wallick on offense are senior Mark Ringeling (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and junior Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly). Eck paced the team with 30 goals, while Ringeling tallied 26 goals, along with eight assists for 34 points. Sophomore Grant Stouffer (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) will also see time on the attack unit during man-up situations after scoring five goals during his first collegiate season.
Junior Dylan Haas (Damascus, Md./Poolesville) is W&J’s top returning faceoff man, in addition to playing midfield. He won nearly 56 percent (64-115) off faceoffs in 2010. Haas was also the fourth-leading scorer with 21 points (11G, 10A) and led the team by picking up 77 ground balls.
The Presidents return a wealth of experience at the midfield position. Accompanying Haas will be a group of five upperclassmen. Juniors Sean Hipley (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) and Tucker Mizhir (Winchendon, Mass./St. Mark’s) both appeared in all 15 games, while combining to tally 11 points. Classmates John Zustra (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) and Tom Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler), along with senior Jake Lippert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and sophomore Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) will also see plenty of action and provide the team with solid depth. Smallwood, Hipley and Zustra all provided four goals last spring.
Junior Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) returns as the team’s starting goalie. A two-year starter, Kirby earned a 10.25 goals against average while racking up 175 saves during 13 appearances last season. Senior Matt Landfried (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) will battle for playing time as well after earning two victories during his three starts a year ago.
Seniors Austin Cahill (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) and Ethan Bodie (Damascus, Md./Damascus) will anchor the defense. The duo has combined to start 55 times over the past three years. Bodie has recorded 65 ground balls, while Cahill has netted six goals. Junior Ryan Cronin (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and sophomores David Behringer (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Quinn Marker (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) will all provide a solid nucleus in front of Kirby.
W&J opens its season in February for the first time since 2009 at Alexandre Stadium on the 25th against Kenyon at 1:00 pm. The Presidents’ first Landmark Conference game is at Goucher on March 17.
