W&J Men's Golf Earns Second-Straight Tournament Title
VERONA, Pa. -- Four Washington & Jefferson College men’s golfers shot rounds of 77 or better to lead the Presidents to the team title Thursday, April 21 at the 2011 Carnegie Mellon University Invitational at Longue Vue Country Club.
The Presidents carded a team score of 302 to best the five-team field of CMU (309), Division II California, Pa. (312), Westminster (323) and Saint Vincent (331). Cal’s Paul Babashanian earned medalist honors after shooting a two-over par score of 72. W&J senior Brad Cieslinski (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highlands) was second in the 29-golfer field with 73 strokes.
Freshmen Colin Izzo (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Tyler Fewell (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) tied for fourth place after posting 76, while classmate Adam Hallberlin (Washington, D.C./Montgomery Blair) tied for eighth place with 77 strokes.
Senior E.J. Morascyzk (Washington, Pa./Trinity) rounded out the W&J competitors in 23rd place after shooting 85.
W&J now sets its focus on the 2011 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship, the final 36 holes of the championship series which determine the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The first 18 holes at Oak Tree Country Club will be played on Tuesday with the final 18 holes following a day later.
The Presidents own a 23-stroke lead on Grove City after the first 36 holes which took place during the fall season.
