W&J Men's Golf Opens Fall Season In New York
STAFFORD, N.Y. -- Sophomore Evan Lestini (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) picked up where he left off from his first collegiate season with back-to-back rounds of 77 this weekend at the St. John Fisher Invitational at Stafford Country Club.
W&J placed sixth of 10 teams in the tournament with 642 strokes (327-315). The Presidents, who were tied for fifth after the first day of competition, finished behind St. John Fisher (602--298-304), Allegheny (613--303-310), University of Ottawa (614--305-309), Daemen (618--308-310) and St. John Fisher "B" (624--314-310).
Lestini, a PING All-Region choice last year, led the Presidents with 154 strokes and tied for 10th place in the 55-golfer field, while junior Ryan Mazza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) was one shot behind after carding 77 strokes Saturday and 78 on Sunday. Mazza tied for 14th place.
St. John Fisher's Thad Weir birdied the 36th and final hole to earn medalist honors with a one-under par total of 143 (71-72). Elmira's Evan Clarke was second at 144 (74-70).
2012 First Team All-PAC honoree junior Matt Stearns (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) amassed 162 shots (83-79) to place 35th, while freshman Hunter Bagiatis (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) totaled 173 strokes (92-81, T51st). Sophomore Tim Novic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) opened with a round of 90, but was forced to sit out Sunday's final round due to an illness.
W&J is back in action next weekend (Sept. 15-16) in Meadville for the Allegheny Guy Kuhn Invitational.
