W&J Men's Lacrosse Earns First-Ever Landmark Conference Victory
KING'S POINT, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored with 58 seconds remaining to give Washington & Jefferson its first-ever Landmark Conference men's lacrosse victory after defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents (5-10, 1-4 Landmark), who are competing in the Landmark Conference for the first time in 2012, have now won three consecutive matches. Junior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) assisted on the game-winning goal after tying the game himself with 2:08 left in regulation. Junior goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) continued his stellar play in the net by amassing 22 saves.
W&J led the entire first half after senior attacker Andrew Wallick (Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) scored two minutes into the match and classmate Mark Ringleling (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) followed with back-to-back goals four minutes apart.
USMMA (4-10, 0-5 Landmark) scored three of the next four goals, but freshman midfielder Will Wagner (Riva, Md./South River) found the back of the net at the 4:14 mark to put the Presidents in front 5-3 at halftime.
The Merchant Marines started the second half strong with three consecutive tallies to grab their first lead 6-5 with 9:50 left in the third quarter. The score remained that way for 15 minutes until Eck scored the first of his three fourth-quarter goals with 9:23 left.
Tyler Spaulding and Eck traded goals back-and-forth for the next seven minutes until Smallwood broke the tie in the final minute. Spaulding finished with three goals and one assist for USMMA which outshot W&J 47-33. Matt Kantor made 14 saves in the loss.
Eck paced the Presidents with three goals and one assist, while junior attacker Sean Hipley (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) also scored one goal.
Washington & Jefferson looks to end its season with a four-game win streak next Saturday when hosting Drew on Senior Day at 1:00 pm at Alexandre Stadium.
